We would like the option to have multiple “reasons” within the “introduction” paragraph. This allows for greater flexibility that may be required for less technical positions. Also, having the ability to delineate between multiple reasons can help discretely clarify one’s interests. For example, if someone has two separate reasons why they are interested in the position, it would be helpful to specify them distinctly in the markup. The ability to add an optional URL to contacts (for Linkedin, CV/portfolio website, or a code repository) will allow people to quickly access your previous work and get a greater sense of your abilities/experience. Some companies require a portfolio submission to accompany resumes and this will act as a smooth transition into that presentation.
We would also like the ability to write free text in background paragraphs. Being able to write outside of the given “experience” elements will allow sentences to flow more casually. For example, adding a transitional sentence between two separate experiences would help the flow of the material. Several group members mentioned that “proposition” should be optional within the intro paragraph. A required “proposition” section can force the writer to present a repetitive statement depending on the manner in which they wrote the opening of their intro paragraph. For example, one writer may want to end their intro by emphasizing their enthusiasm to join the company.
We felt that the background section should also allow for an “interest” tag. For example, in regards to an application for a game company, expressing an interest in multiplayer networks will show compatibility with the company with better flow than stating it later within the “compatibility” section. Another example of this would be a long-time interest in engine development as it applies to a job at GE. As a final formatting note, an optional extra paragraph break space or image file before the printed “name” in the salutation for an electronic signature (either to be digitally/physically drawn in or image pasted in) that could improve the professional appearance of the cover letter.
