Design Entry 6 – Matt Parlon

The genre of public initiative proposal can be the uptake of several situations but can also be sparked by something as simple as an individual desire for change. If one person sees a problem they wish to have addressed, they have the power to write a proposal with the intended uptake of public action to address their area of concern. That being said, public initiative proposals can also be the uptake of a public discussion at a town meeting or of formal complaints to the local government. The intended uptake to a complaint would be an apology or a solution but proposals are the first step associated with improvements. Although they may not be the intention of the person issuing the complaint, they are necessary to achieve their final goal.

Typically the intended uptake to a proposal is acceptance at a public hearing and an RFP to aid in the process of hiring contractors to do the work laid out in the initial proposal.

The genre model that we have put together follows the general thought process we observed when one might be referencing a previous document. For example, we have an objective portion that lays out the intended impact we would like made. This can be followed by the goal, which is a more concrete desired output that will have an effect that leads to the objective completion. Lets say someone complains that the library is not handicap friendly. The objective of a project could be to make the library handicap friendly, however the goal would be to install a wheelchair ramp and handicap parking spaces.

Many points in this process are influenced by uptake. When some company is responding to a RFP, they would not only check off all that the RFP asks for, they may also check against the initial proposal to gain situational context as outlined in the reading earlier this week.
